Main Street
Flag |
|
The best known Newtown landmark is the flag pole in the center of Main Street. The red white and blue proudly flies over the town year round. The flagpole is maintained by former Newtown police officer David Lydem. Each spring the flag that flew through the winter is brought down and it is replaced with a new and much larger summer flag. The Newtown Loins club provides the funds to purchase the new summer flag and members of the club assist with the raising of the new flag. |

Orchard Hill Nature Center |

The Newtown Lions assisted in improvements
to the Orchard Hill Nature Center, located off Huntingtown Road in Newtown.
Lions cleared the way, marked trails and built a kiosk with a map of the
center. Twice each year a team of Lions conducts a clean up to keep the
trails clear for the enjoyment of visitors. |
Various Organizations |
|
|
|
The Lions motto is WE SERVE and when
the opportunity arises we work with other organizations in our community.
We assist the Salvation Army with their holiday fund raising as we pick
up a bell and take a post behind their kettle for a day. We have worked
with other community groups on many other projects and provide financial
support for organizations who help others. |
When we heard that the Danbury, CT based
411th Civil Affairs Battalion of the National Guard was deployed in Iraq,
our club coordinated efforts to send care packages to the troops. The
packages that contained snacks, toiletries, supplies and greetings from
home were mailed to each deployed member of the 411th. We have also sent
packages to other local residents deployed in the Gulf. |
